Salem was founded in 1626 by Roger Conant and a group of immigrants from Cape Ann. The settlement was originally named Naumkeag, but the settlers preferred to call it Salem, derived from the Hebrew word for peace. Although most famous for the 1692 Salem Witch Trials, Salem has a vast and deep maritime history as well.
